Rutgers University’s Critical AI is hosting a workshop series on “The Ethics of Data Curation.” Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and Rutgers Global through a collaboration between Rutgers and the Australian National University. RIIPL co-director Professor Ellen P. Goodman is on the Critical AI steering committee.
The workshop kicks off on Thursday, 10/7/2021 at 5:30pm EST with a discussion of “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots,” a comprehensive analysis of large language models and their impact by Emily Bender (who will be visiting in March) and Timnit Gebru et al. Facilitated by Kath Bode (Data History, ANU) and Matthew Stone (Computer Science, RU).
Then on Thursday, 10/14/2021 at 5:30pm EST (workshop meeting to follow), we will host Meredith Broussard, Research Director at the NYU Alliance for Public Interest Technology and author of the award-winning book, Artificial Unintelligence: How Computers Misunderstand the World (MIT, 2018).
The complete workshop, which runs through May 2022, will include visits from Emily Bender (University of Washington), Salome Viljoen (Columbia Law) and Sasha Costanza-Chock (Director of Research & Design for the Algorithmic Justice League), and a December 2021 event on AI and the arts.”
