When the New York Times ran a huge story on Clearview AI (1/18/20) and how local police departments were using scraped social media data to conduct facial recognition, it was blockbuster news.
That story drew on Muckrock’s database of records collected through FOIA requests of state and local governments related to algorithmic systems — a joint project along with RIIPL to foster transparency around government use of AI and algorithms. #AlgorithmicControl. That database is now open for public use and contribution.
